You might have seen that the Rugby League World Cup, is going to be held in the UK later this year (rolled over to 2022 from 2021 due to Covid-19).
It will now be held between Saturday 15th October and Saturday 19th November 2022.
The great news is that Doncaster is hosting not one, but THREE Men’s games at the Eco-Power Stadium (formerly Keepmoat Stadium). It’s not every year that we get these type of high profile sporting events in our town. The Rugby League World Cup provides a fantastic opportunity to inspire young people to embrace the power of sport.
If you’ve not watched a live match before, then now is the time to book your ticket. Organisers in Doncaster would love the seats to be filled with our local community! They’d love to see our children and their families in the stadium enjoying the experience and with tickets for children are starting at just £2.21, it’s a whole lot cheaper than you might think! People will be travelling here from far and wide. I imagined the cost of seeing a world class sporting event would be a lot more, but we’ve booked our tickets and for my family of 4 it cost less than £25 so it’s a really affordable and the atmosphere is set to be great. Events like these usually bring a real buzz with them, so it’s very exciting. We are hosting the Samoan team too, who will be training here and staying in Doncaster for the duration of the event.
SO much has been happening in Doncaster in the run up to the RLWC – there are a lot of people making sure the event itself runs smoothly here, but also that our children are being introduced to rugby and that there is a lasting legacy. The RLWC2021 legacy team in Doncaster have been out and about with lots of local schools, with many children being introduced to rugby for the first time.
Hayfield Primary were lucky enough to learn a Samoan dance with former Samoan Professional rugby player Freddie Tuilagi! Doncaster is host to the Samoan team who will stay here and train here throughout the tournament.
Children will also be more involved in the actual matches, with children from Doncaster acting as flag bearers, so do look out for more information.
These are the primary schools taking part in the legacy work:
If you’d like to get involved and learn more, there is a RLWC2021 Education hub, which provides not only resources to support delivery of rugby league across our primary and secondary schools, but also provides a vast array of cross-curricular lesson plans to educate our primary age children using the excitement surrounding a world class sporting event happening right here in England!
If you’re reading this and have a little one who is interested in learning more and getting creative, here are some colouring/worksheets to keep them busy! Do share them with the Doncaster Legacy Team on social media as they’d love to see them.
