I’ve been watching the build of the new Doncaster Central Library and Museum with interest. It used to be my school and I’m sure lots of other Mumblers have passed through the doors of the site before, which is on the corner of Waterdale and Chequer Road in the Town Centre.
Construction of the iconic building began in October 2018 – if you’ve seen it, you’ll know it that they have encased the former front of the school in glass, whilst retaining some of the original features – it looks great and is scheduled to be complete in summer 2020!
I was lucky enough to have a sneak peak at some of the information about the new library and museum earlier in the year and i’m pleased to say that catering for families is high on the agenda. The building will be a brilliant place for people of all ages and attract visitors from outside Doncaster, making it a real destination.
It will a hub of creativity, and a cultural and learning centre that everyone can enjoy, experience and use.
There will be space to display exhibits including the Danum Shield and a new rail heritage centre with the possibility to display two locomotive engines built in Doncaster.
The new building will be home to:
There are also plans to launch a dedicated travelling museum in spring 2020 funded by Arts Council England. The mobile museum will travel across the borough and have a ‘Best of Doncaster’ theme. It will showcase artefacts that will go in to the new musem.
There will be a special ‘All Change’ exhibition to showcase the history of Doncaster museum past and present – the old museum on Chequer Road will close it’s doors on Friday 17th January 2020.
