On Saturday 29 June, as part of the Doncaster Storytelling Festival, Sandall Beat Woods is playing host to a magical day out for the whole family.
Fairytales in the Woods is a completely free event, running from 9:45am-3:00pm, where families can discover the power of classic fairytale picture books, through storytelling sessions, nature crafts and draw alongs.
It’s not just the kids who will have fun though – organised by the National Literacy Trust in Doncaster, in partnership with Better Heath, Start for Life, there will be loads of tips and advice for parents on how their every day actions and little moments together can help their child develop the literacy skills they need to thrive.
Throughout the day, children and parents are invited to collect stickers and goodies as they visit each of the eight activity stalls, and every family will receive a bundle of fairytale books for them to take home and read together, as well as have the opportunity to enter a competition to win a fairytale bundle.
Parents can experience and try out a range of activities from the National Literacy Trust’s Chat, Play, Read interactive booklet, designed to give parents the tools they need to help their baby develop their early language and communication skills at home. The development that happens during your child’s first five years has a huge impact, and can help improve their future learning, happiness and wellbeing. Whether you are changing nappies, or singing nursery rhymes, every interaction with your baby helps them understand how to communicate with the world around them.
For more information, advice and support, visit Words For Life to download resources which will give you an idea of the fun and interactive ways you can support your baby’s literacy skills from day one. You can also sign up for our Words for Life newsletter, to receive top tips, fun activities and quality advice delivered straight to your inbox.
So, whether you’re a dab hand at drawing your child’s favourite fairytale character or you struggle to recount the names of Snow White’s seven dwarves (we can’t remember them all, either!), come along to experience your very own Fairytale in the Woods and enjoy a wonderful day out with your little ones. There’s no registration required, please come along at a time which suits you, and stay for as long as you like!
Please note: Storytelling sessions will be held at 10am, 11:30am, and 2pm.
