Doncaster Mumbler Awards 2020 Nominations so far: Teacher/Child Practitioner of the Year, sponsored by Cirque
The Doncaster Mumbler Awards nominations went live in July and although we don’t usually publish the nominations and comments, I thought that every single person who receives a nomination deserves to read their messages of thanks & support at this time as things start to reopen.
Particularly as we had a very strange school summer term!
I hope that these comments show the Teachers and Child Practitioners nominated you how much you are appreciated by Doncaster families!
The finalists will be announced on 1st September here
In alphabetical order as I ran the report (some nominees were listed as Miss/Mrs etc so appear in M) – I’ve taken one nomination comment for each business that has been nominated

Learnt my son to ride his bike in just 2 lessons after I had been trying so much with no success, very impressed.
Angharad is one of our children’s dance teachers at Jackie Everton dance and stage school and she deserves this for her pure love and dedication to our children! She is the most kind hearted, selfless person I know and classes every single one of our kids like her own! Since lockdown she has provided weekly dance and activities for the kids to take part in keeping them fully occupied and entertained, she has given them one to one lessons out of her own time as well as continuing to work full time at her school! She really is an inspiration to us all and we are forever grateful for her time and efforts to keep the kids healthy, fit and engaged! Nothing is ever too much trouble for her! We love her!
Annette & Mick (Annette & Mick’s Childcare)
They are the heart of Hatfield! Not only do they look after half of the villages children but they love them as they’re own. They teach, shape and help to raise these children from birth to 12 years old. After 26 years of childminding they are now looking after the children whose parents they also looked after. They also run a local playgroup for all Parents, they are councillors to parents struggling. Always there to lend a hand or shoulder to cry on. They go above an beyond in their job and deserve so much recognition!
Becky Parkinson – Cre8ive Dance Teacher
Miss Becky has absolutely knocked herself out over the lockdown to make sure the kids she works with stayed healthy and active. She planned and organised the teaching team at Cre8ive nd they have produced hours and hours of on line dancing lessons and fitness videos that the children could watch at their own pace. But they set challenges to keep them motivated. And as soon as they were able she had teachers back in the studio delivering lessons via Zoom, but she delivered the majority of these sessions herself. And beyond all of that they kept in touch with the kids several times a week to check on their well being and support them emotionally and facilitated contact with their peers so they weren’t socially isolated. If Miss Becky ran the primary schools we would have the best, healthiest, most well rounded education system in the country!
Always willing to help and commited
Bob Martin – Doncaster Eagles Basketball Club
Because he spends such a lot of time and effort with my son and the other basketball kids, teams, practices, leagues and schools. He gives everyone such a lot of one to one time and always listens to everything they have to say. My son does loves him immensely.
Charlotte Bramham, St Mary’s Day Nursery
After a very rocky start to the year following a close family bereavement we also had to start our 9 month old baby son at nursery during lockdown. Charlotte has been so welcoming and professional from day one and our little one has really taken a shine to her, not only does he throughly enjoy nursery and learn lots but he gets lots of reassurance and cuddles from Charlotte which is really important to us, he has come on lots and is now walking! She really lights up his day and he beams when he sees her. It has made the whole process so much easier for us as a family and we are happy to have chosen St Marys.
Amazing with my child and brilliant with children. Always bubbly and very positive with children and staff’s all the time! She is very engaging with children and she is very fun to make the sessions really fun, her teaching styles is amazing! Chelsea is very hard working practitioner, she is amazing with special needs and deaf children. I wouldn’t find another teacher like her at all! She is highly recommended to all the parents

Christine Grace – Scott Stevenson School of Dance
She has taught generations of students at the school for over 30years supporting the students and giving all students, regardless of ability, time and guidance. She has also supported many of the students into becoming young teachers themselves and continues to pass on her knowledge. She is an examiner of the British Association of Teachers of Dancing & has given many dance schools and teachers in the Doncaster area her help & guidance through training days, refresher courses, lectures, personal help with syllabi work and choreography. She travels around the country delivering lectures to ensure students at BATD schools are being provided with quality teaching. She is also a qualified teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance and has helped many of her own students achieve distinction and qualifications that they carry with them whether they pursue a career in dance or not.
Claire Blagden – Castle Academy
Excellent teacher, is aspirational and motivating for the children. She inspires and leads change and is excellent at ensuring inclusion for all – going above and beyond what is expected.
Claire Durkin, Flying Start Day Nursery
Claire has always been supportive as one of our daughters nursery practitioners. She’s helped our daughter grow and learn and transition into Vulcans, our daughters last nursery room before primary school. She always has the time to chat and listen and our daughter still asks to go across to Hurricanes and see her.
Claire Fry – Rossington Family Hub
Amazing support through First Friends group, helped me as a new mum to grow in confidence and helped me with any issues with myself and baby. Such a friendly welcoming face when it’s daunting for you as a new mum entering a room of strangers. Gave me lots of ideas of activities to do with my son and brilliant support given at 6 month and 10 month reviews.
Claire Marshall, Little Einsteins Day Nursery
Claire is amazing at what she does from SENCO, Manager and Room leader at Little Einsteins Wheatley. She deserves this recognition for how much she cares for not only the children but the staff. I just want to say a big thank you for everything you have done throughout lockdown and constantly keeping in touch with everyone to make sure we are all doing ok.
Claire Wimble – Tots Play
Claire is AMAZING. She simply goes the extra mile when it comes to running classes and supporting parents. I’ve attended so many classes throughout Doncaster with my 2 children and no one comes close to Claire. The effort she has put in during lockdown has been phenomenal both paid and free content and support for mamas. She really deserves to be recognised in this category.
She is so caring towards the children and has so much time and patience. She cares for the children to the highest standard and always has a huge smile on her face. It would be amazing for her to get some recognition for the hard work she puts in every day with the children.
Cora, Tall Trees Nursery
I work with cora and have been all way through lock down. Cora is careing and loving young lady that shows towards every child that walks through the door and every child loves her too. Cora is a student doing level 3 and goes above and beyond for everyone and it is a pleasure to work with her.
For being and absolutely amazing dance teacher that always goes the extra mile for her students and has kept them going through lockdown and been a life saver.
Donna Pearce, Stepping Up School of Dance
Miss Donna encourages each child in the school to be the very best they can. During lockdown she has provided daily zoom lessons for each class from babies to adults despite having her own young family to care for. Unfortunately the show that Miss Donna and all her dances had worked so hard to produce at Easter had to be cancelled, but she has continued to be upbeat and determined that “the show will go on!” encouraging each child to continue to practise. The health and well being benefits of the lessons provided for the students during such strange time has been invaluable allowing children not only to exercise but also to socialise during their zoom classes. Miss Donna not only prepares the children to complete yearly IDTA exams but also produces two shows each year and provides the students with opportunities to showcase their talents dancing in Disneyland, Alton Towers and various community based galas. I feel she thoroughly deserves being recognised for her dedication to her “dancing family” not just during these strange times but all the time. Thankyou for all you do Miss Donna #teamsteppingup xxxxx
She is a natural teacher. Caring and professional
Emma Oates – Flying Start Day Nursery
The manager of flying start. Emma is one of the most kind hearted, caring women I have ever met. She is so hands on with everything and make sure each child has the best experience at nursery.
Emma, Tall Trees Nursery
I want to nominate Emma for being such a caring lady with all the children and providing amazing support for all the children during this pandemic. She puts a lot of time and effort into her role at Tall Trees, keep up the good work!
Emma Wainer – Paskals Day Nursery
For being so fantastic with my child, treating her as I would and teaching her how to be a good little human while I work!
Fiona Straw, Little Rascals Edenthorpe
She is amazing. My three boys all loved going here. She spends so much time teaching guiding and having fun with the children. In out eyes she’s simply The best.
Gemma has been teaching children dancing since she was 17, and the impact she has had in that time has been indescribable. Speaking from experience, if I hadn’t have had Gemma to guide and nurture me throughout the years I wouldn’t be where I am today. As a dancer, your safest place is the dance studio, and it is where you spend the majority of your spare time. Your teachers see you grow from pre school age, and are there every step of the way to offer guidance and support. Gemma wears a million hats as well as dance teacher, but most importantly to me and hundreds of young adults in the Doncaster area, adoptive mum and supportive friend. Mental health is also something very dear to Gemmas heart, and she is aware of the prevalence of this in young adults, and does everything she can to ensure her dancers are supported, and know where to turn. Aswell as holding many fundraisers for local mental health charities, recently throughout lockdown she has worked with a team to provide mental wellness sessions for her pupils who may have been struggling at home. It really is hard to find the words to describe why she deserves this award, when she deserves the world and more, but this would be a start to show our gratitude!
Hannah Buchanan – The Level School
Hannah completed her teaching qualifications and has been a teacher for a number of years. She teaches children who cannot attend main stream school for various reasons. Hannah is always positive and smiling even though she faces challenging behaviour every day. Hannah spends a lot of her own personal time preparing lessons and looking for recourses to use. She supports each child’s individual needs to help build their confidence and self esteem. She encourages children to be the best they can be. Hannah is a supportive and caring person.
Hayley Flowitt and Helen Tyas, Outwood Academy Adwick
Miss Flowitt and Mrs Tyas are hardworking and inspirational English teachers, who have gone above and beyond normal expectations. They have successfully adapted to the teaching challenges presented by the lock down and provided a wide variety of work on google classroom. Not only have they provided opportunities to encourage written creativity, but they have also challenged their students’ analytical skills on topical issues such as BLM. Reading for pleasure has also been promoted throughout the time my child has been taught by them. During the pandemic, they have constantly stayed in contact with their classes and given them valuable feedback via emails and voice messages; encouraging the children to push themselves and keep going during these difficult times. The pair have also made phone calls to parents to keep them informed of their child’s progress, and rewarded the students for their efforts. It is clear that they truly care about the children in their classes and are passionate about their work.
Hannah – Little Einsteins Day Nursery
My children just love her and she’s so kind and smiley every time we see her.
Hilary Needham, Nellie Stagles School of Dance
Children who work with Miss Hilary learn much more than dance. She teaches positivity, compassion, confidence … and humour! She embraces and celebrates the individual qualities of every learner, giving them the chance to be the best they can be.
Janet Marsh – PQA Doncaster
Rarely have I met a teacher who is more dedicated and enthusiastic than Janet. She is committed to ensuring that each student meets their potential and nothing is too much trouble for her. She organised trips, cinema screenings, masterclasses and much more. She supports each and every student always greets them with a ready smile and much enthusiasm. A worthy candidate.
Jasmine Vessey – All That Jazz School of Dance
She is an amazing support to her students and looks after their welfare. She teaches all ages and all class styles.

Jo is the principal at ETA Doncaster. She has belief in all of her students and has supported both of my daughters to grow and develop into wonderful singers and actors. She is kind, caring and always puts others before herself. Jo works unbelievably hard to provide her students with first class lessons and opportunities.
Stepping up to room leader
Miss Julie has supported all of her dance students throughout Lockdown and beyond, setting challenges to keep the children focused, active and happy, with no financial reward whatsoever, as dance studios closed at the start of lockdown and have still not re-opened.
Karen & Emma, Flying Start
Really went above and beyond when they were closed in lockdown, communicating via tapestry, giving us helpful tips for activities, reading stories and sharing them. Answering questions when our children were asking for a certain song that we just didn’t know! They’re a fab team together, always smiling and they seem really happy in their job which I think helps the nursery moral and then makes the children happy. Thank you
Kat Woolley – Potteric Carr Forest School
Kat is the education specialist working at Potteric Carr nature reserve. Kat has run the forest tots school for numerous years, home education classes and school holiday activities meeting the national curriculum. Kat is the most amazing teacher ever, full of passion and energy. She combines her love for teaching with her passion for nature. Her lessons are varied and meet all needs from quiet reading to digging out bugs. My children have learned to pond dip and can identify a wide range of species of pond life, birds, build dens and are competent users of binoculars, bat detectors, identification sheets and reference books. Kat is also a sought after teacher for both children and adults

She uses each child’s strengths to provide them with dance routines to not only match their ability but also their personality. Not only does she teach them, she inspires them to be like her.
Kay Wrigelsworth and Rachel Tarantiuk, Arabesque Dance School
For keeping our kids going during lockdown and providing the children with lots of zoom classes to further their knowledge and skills in dance and acro. My children have both grown in their dance skills thanks to both of these teachers. Had these classes not continued all the kids would have fallen behind and mental health would have suffered. Thanks for making the classes fun and engaging. From enhancing their dancing to scavenger hunts and tiktok/make-up workshops. You’ve both been amazing
Nothing is too much trouble for Kim. She is always there for everyone and always puts the children first! Kim is always very welcoming to children and parents and is a great asset to the Nursery. She works so hard to meet the needs of both children and their families!
They are all so good with children. At the football sessions, in schools and the online videos during lockdown. Thank you
Leanne Webster – Little Learners Day Nursery
Leanne is brilliant with children and cares about each child as though they’re her own, she works so hard within every aspect of her job, and is forever finding new ideas to help with planning for activities. Also progressing her personal development with various training courses too.
Lesley Clark, Oaks Childcare Limited
This lady always goes above and beyond to help the families in her care from providing flexible rotas to providing advice and help for families in need. She and her Co Partner Toni, help to hand pick their staff so as to continue to provide a outstanding service. They are happy to hear about and undertake any courses to aid and extend their knowledge in providing a better service to the community and They are always willing and happy to lend a helping hand to the community. She is a very caring, happy, smiley, friendly lady. Alongside Lesley Clark her Co Partner and Long time friend Toni Foerman, they provide a brilliant and friendly service to all that seek them out and they often come highly recommended by friends and other people in the community. All the staff work hard for the business and community. She has commited many, many years to providing the best childcare service she can to families that need it and this is why I would like to nominate this super Lady.
Lesley goes over and above in everything she does. She has recently qualified as a forest school practitioner and she spends all her spare time planning activities and preparing resources. She has worked throughout the pandemic with key worker children and despite not being on the rota, is still working hard to get the area ready for September for the children. She is also one of the kindest, friendliest people I have ever met.
Linda Carlton, Little Einsteins
The most amazing lady I have ever met. She is brilliant at her job and seems to love every minute of it. She is so friendly, caring and will do anything for the children in her care.
Mrs Blackham is one amazing lady and our school is extremely lucky to have her, she is the person who everyone runs to, she not only teaches and covers classes she has the role of supporting parents, supports students. She is the one who literally runs all the fundraising events with the PTA, she supported our children ambassadors to make a difference in their community. She has so many roles in the school I’m not even sure what her title is. She is loved by all the children, parents and staff.. no one is more Deserving than Mrs Blackham.
Lisa is so kind and welcoming ever since my little boy started the nursery. She goes above and beyond for him and myself, any problems we’ve ever had she tries her best to sort for us. My little boy has always loved Lisa, she’s fantastic!
Louise is the most wonderful practitioner I have ever known. She is vibrant, bubbly and always has a positive attitude. Her ability to understand a child’s needs and adapt her practice accordingly is impeccable. She has a warmth to her which isn’t possessed by many, she is the kind of person who you want to be around, and the kind of person who you want to teach your children. She has been an absolute angel with my children and I can’t imagine their early education journey without her.
Lucy Whawell – St Mary’s Day Nursery
Lucy is an asset to this nursery and has brilliant instincts and insight into what early years children need to be happy and confident away from their parents. We can’t thank her enough for the extra mile she goes to settle our little girl back into the learning environment after lockdown and lots of changes at home.
This lady won’t get any more votes other than mine as she’s looked after and taught my child on a one to one basis for 5 years as a learning support assistant so no one else has benefited from her support other than us so I can’t see my vote counting but I still could not vote for anyone else. This lady is the reason my child has progressed so well during her infant years (my child had a stroke at birth therefore numerous learning and physical difficulties). Not only has she taught my child and taught her well, she’s taken the time to get to know her inside out, as much as I do, she’s looked into her condition and studied it over and over in her own time, I know this from the many things she would say when I dropped my daughter off or picked her up that it was obvious she was doing her homework so to speak, she really cared and I dread to think where my daughter would be now if it wasn’t for her believing in her.
Marie Harvey – Marie Newson School of Dance
She values every child and Is patient. She gets out the best from everyone. Everyone looks forward to the class because they love her. Its like one big family. She is such a wonderful person my child has attended for four years and she has always goes above and beyond for Everyone. Nothing is to much trouble for her . She teaches in away the kids enjoy and do improve and progress. I absolutely value her In my children’s progress and with her guidance they have improved in other social aspects . I am really pleased my children get taught by her and would love her to receive the recognition I believe she deserves .
Marija Bratcher, Edenthorpe Hall Academy
Mrs B has taught my child in reception last year but this year teaching my second child has been the one that motivates this nomination. She has been kind, patient, supportive and helpful. I have cried so many times to her with concerns over my youngest boys behaviour and she is the first professional to make me feel listened to and has taken my concerns seriously. With her help, he has been referred for a GDA assessment. She is an absolute credit to Edenthorpe Hall Academy and I will never be able to thank her for everything she has given my family. She has changed our lives and supported us no end. Even during the COVID-19 outbreak she has been in contact numerous times a week to ensure we had a person fighting our corner. If I can’t buy her a desert island, an award nomination will have to be enough!

They are lovely and kind coaches. Dedicated to making each session fun and active my daughter loves them both
The little ones love her! It shines through that she really cares about the children and always puts a smile on their face. We love Kayla!

Everyday she posted words of encouragement, and checked all was well when she was concerned for you. She went out of her way to collect photos of the class to make Birthday videos for those not able to get the normal class singalong. And she even arranged a whole school Teacher dancing videos to keep our spirits up. As she is leaving our school this year to fulfill her dream of teaching children with special needs, she even did a doorstep goodbye to the children in her class. Miss Hirst has definitely gone above and beyond in her duties, and I feel she should be recognised for this.
Miss Alex – Locomotion Dance Studios

Mrs Brown has been brilliant from day one when my little girl started school. Even during the pandemic she has been on the other end of the phone and email to support me and my child any time we needed her. Mrs K always has time for all the children in the school, she goes above and beyond and is a fantastic role model. She supports the parents as much as the children, I always leave a conversation with her feeling much more relaxed. What a star!
Miss Laura Turner
There are so many reasons why this lady is amazing. She goes above and beyond for every student, throughout the lockdown she has worked tirelessly providing home learning and support while at the same time giving the same amount of care, consideration and nurturing to those children who have had to remain at school. She’s more than a teacher to her students, she’s a carer, someone to look up too and some one who cares about each and everyone of them. I’m so lucky my daughter had her for the last year to nurture her, and encourage her learning with which she has now developed, and she has so much more confidence. Even luckier to know this will go on for the next year also. Throughout all of this she has been my unsung hero!
Mr Lee Penno
My son thinks Mr Penno is an amazing teacher and he’s very sad he is unable to have him for another school year. He only had him for a short while due to the circumstances of the virus but in that time he built up a good relationship with his teacher and during the lock down Mr Penno has kept in contact with all the children going the extra mile if the children needed anything.
Mrs Light, Highfield Academy

I don’t think I will ever be able to put into words how grateful I am to Mrs Lowe but I will try. Mrs Lowe is the kindest, most genuine and hard working teacher my daughter has ever had. She has taught my daughter a completely different attitude to learning and has helped her gain so much confidence. Mrs Lowe has been a constant support throughout lockdown. She has emailed near enough every day, done a complete work timetable for every week, and I know she is there for us whenever we have needed her. What I love most about Mrs Lowe is that she doesn’t expect the children to fit into a certain ‘box’ she appreciates every child for their uniqueness and encourages them massively to embrace themselves. To put it simply, Mrs Price is an AMAZING teacher! My son was new to the school in September, and she was happy and friendly from the first time we met her. My son quickly settled into her class, and has absolutely thrived with her teaching, support and guidance. Mrs Price has worked extremely hard to support my son during lockdown – she has provided fun and interesting learning activities to do at home, we have had weekly telephone calls or video calls to have a catch up too. She has also been on hand to offer support and guidance – especially when my son had an issue in the first few weeks of lockdown; I asked for a bit of help and she telephoned us the day after to speak to us both. I am thrilled my son had the chance to be in her class, and we will miss her lots!

Scott has been my sons football coach since he was 4 years old. He is absolutely amazing with children so patient and understanding of their needs. Scott always puts the children first he’s always told the children winning doesn’t matter it’s the learning of the skills in which to play the game that matters once the learning and understanding of the game and it’s play is understood then winning comes with it. Scott has had his fair share of ups and downs throughout the past year or so but has come shining through and never lets anything get in the way of being the best football coach to the team as he always put their needs first. He works full time and coaches this grassroots under 8’s team in his spare time. Throughout the whole of lockdown Scott has provided the team with online virtual training sessions including yoga fitness and skills training to each and every one of the team on a 3 x a weekly basis to enable the team to keep their spirits up and keeping them fit and in touch with everyone in their team. All of the Children who play In our team absolutely adore their coach and the feelings are reciprocated to each and every one of the children. His commitment to the team is outstanding and I myself cannot thank him enough for his Positive attitude and Selflessness and have the upmost admiration for him.
