The Doncaster Mumbler Awards nominations went live in July and although we don’t usually publish the nominations and comments, I thought that every single person who receives a nomination deserves to read their messages of thanks & support at this time as things start to reopen.
Particularly as we had a very strange school summer term!
I hope that these comments show the Teachers and Child Practitioners nominated you how much you are appreciated by Doncaster families!
The finalists will be announced on 1st September here

Since lockdown she has provided weekly dance and activities for the kids to take part in keeping them fully occupied and entertained, she has given them one to one lessons out of her own time as well as continuing to work full time at her school! She really is an inspiration to us all and we are forever grateful for her time and efforts to keep the kids healthy, fit and engaged! Nothing is ever too much trouble for her! We love her!
Annette & Mick (Annette & Mick’s Childcare)
- They are the heart of Hatfield! Not only do they look after half of the villages children but they love them as they’re own. They teach, shape and help to raise these children from birth to 12 years old. After 26 years of childminding they are now looking after the children whose parents they also looked after. They also run a local playgroup for all Parents, they are councillors to parents struggling. Always there to lend a hand or shoulder to cry on. They go above an beyond in their job and deserve so much recognition!
Becky Parkinson – Cre8ive Dance Teacher
- Miss Becky has absolutely knocked herself out over the lockdown to make sure the kids she works with stayed healthy and active. She planned and organised the teaching team at Cre8ive nd they have produced hours and hours of on line dancing lessons and fitness videos that the children could watch at their own pace. But they set challenges to keep them motivated. And as soon as they were able she had teachers back in the studio delivering lessons via Zoom, but she delivered the majority of these sessions herself. And beyond all of that they kept in touch with the kids several times a week to check on their well being and support them emotionally and facilitated contact with their peers so they weren’t socially isolated. If Miss Becky ran the primary schools we would have the best, healthiest, most well rounded education system in the country!

She always has the time to chat and listen and our daughter still asks to go across to Hurricanes and see her.
Claire Fry – Rossington Family Hub
- Amazing support through First Friends group, helped me as a new mum to grow in confidence and helped me with any issues with myself and baby. Such a friendly welcoming face when it’s daunting for you as a new mum entering a room of strangers. Gave me lots of ideas of activities to do with my son and brilliant support given at 6 month and 10 month reviews.
Claire Marshall, Little Einsteins Day Nursery
- Claire is amazing at what she does from SENCO, Manager and Room leader at Little Einsteins Wheatley. She deserves this recognition for how much she cares for not only the children but the staff. I just want to say a big thank you for everything you have done throughout lockdown and constantly keeping in touch with everyone to make sure we are all doing ok.
Claire Wimble – Tots Play
- Claire is AMAZING. She simply goes the extra mile when it comes to running classes and supporting parents. I’ve attended so many classes throughout Doncaster with my 2 children and no one comes close to Claire. The effort she has put in during lockdown has been phenomenal both paid and free content and support for mamas. She really deserves to be recognised in this category.
Claudine Gill

Crystal Bermingham
- For being and absolutely amazing dance teacher that always goes the extra mile for her students and has kept them going through lockdown and been a life saver.
Donna Pearce, Stepping Up School of Dance
- Miss Donna encourages each child in the school to be the very best they can. During lockdown she has provided daily zoom lessons for each class from babies to adults despite having her own young family to care for. Unfortunately the show that Miss Donna and all her dances had worked so hard to produce at Easter had to be cancelled, but she has continued to be upbeat and determined that “the show will go on!” encouraging each child to continue to practise. The health and well being benefits of the lessons provided for the students during such strange time has been invaluable allowing children not only to exercise but also to socialise during their zoom classes. Miss Donna not only prepares the children to complete yearly IDTA exams but also produces two shows each year and provides the students with opportunities to showcase their talents dancing in Disneyland, Alton Towers and various community based galas. I feel she thoroughly deserves being recognised for her dedication to her “dancing family” not just during these strange times but all the time. Thankyou for all you do Miss Donna #teamsteppingup xxxxx

Fiona Straw, Little Rascals Edenthorpe
- She is amazing. My three boys all loved going here. She spends so much time teaching guiding and having fun with the children. In out eyes she’s simply The best.
Gemma Lee
- Gemma has been teaching children dancing since she was 17, and the impact she has had in that time has been indescribable. Speaking from experience, if I hadn’t have had Gemma to guide and nurture me throughout the years I wouldn’t be where I am today. As a dancer, your safest place is the dance studio, and it is where you spend the majority of your spare time. Your teachers see you grow from pre school age, and are there every step of the way to offer guidance and support. Gemma wears a million hats as well as dance teacher, but most importantly to me and hundreds of young adults in the Doncaster area, adoptive mum and supportive friend. Mental health is also something very dear to Gemmas heart, and she is aware of the prevalence of this in young adults, and does everything she can to ensure her dancers are supported, and know where to turn. Aswell as holding many fundraisers for local mental health charities, recently throughout lockdown she has worked with a team to provide mental wellness sessions for her pupils who may have been struggling at home. It really is hard to find the words to describe why she deserves this award, when she deserves the world and more, but this would be a start to show our gratitude!
Hannah Buchanan – The Level School
- Hannah completed her teaching qualifications and has been a teacher for a number of years. She teaches children who cannot attend main stream school for various reasons. Hannah is always positive and smiling even though she faces challenging behaviour every day. Hannah spends a lot of her own personal time preparing lessons and looking for recourses to use. She supports each child’s individual needs to help build their confidence and self esteem. She encourages children to be the best they can be. Hannah is a supportive and caring person.
Hayley Flowitt and Helen Tyas, Outwood Academy Adwick
- Miss Flowitt and Mrs Tyas are hardworking and inspirational English teachers, who have gone above and beyond normal expectations. They have successfully adapted to the teaching challenges presented by the lock down and provided a wide variety of work on google classroom. Not only have they provided opportunities to encourage written creativity, but they have also challenged their students’ analytical skills on topical issues such as BLM. Reading for pleasure has also been promoted throughout the time my child has been taught by them. During the pandemic, they have constantly stayed in contact with their classes and given them valuable feedback via emails and voice messages; encouraging the children to push themselves and keep going during these difficult times. The pair have also made phone calls to parents to keep them informed of their child’s progress, and rewarded the students for their efforts. It is clear that they truly care about the children in their classes and are passionate about their work.
Hannah – Little Einsteins Day Nursery
- My children just love her and she’s so kind and smiley every time we see her.
Hilary Needham, Nellie Stagles School of Dance
- Children who work with Miss Hilary learn much more than dance. She teaches positivity, compassion, confidence … and humour! She embraces and celebrates the individual qualities of every learner, giving them the chance to be the best they can be.

She organised trips, cinema screenings, masterclasses and much more. She supports each and every student always greets them with a ready smile and much enthusiasm. A worthy candidate.

She is kind, caring and always puts others before herself. Jo works unbelievably hard to provide her students with first class lessons and opportunities.
Josh Johnson
- Stepping up to room leader
Julie Riley
- Miss Julie has supported all of her dance students throughout Lockdown and beyond, setting challenges to keep the children focused, active and happy, with no financial reward whatsoever, as dance studios closed at the start of lockdown and have still not re-opened.
Karen & Emma, Flying Start
- Really went above and beyond when they were closed in lockdown, communicating via tapestry, giving us helpful tips for activities, reading stories and sharing them. Answering questions when our children were asking for a certain song that we just didn’t know! They’re a fab team together, always smiling and they seem really happy in their job which I think helps the nursery moral and then makes the children happy. Thank you
Kat Woolley – Potteric Carr Forest School
- Kat is the education specialist working at Potteric Carr nature reserve. Kat has run the forest tots school for numerous years, home education classes and school holiday activities meeting the national curriculum. My children have both grown in their dance skills thanks to both of these teachers. Had these classes not continued all the kids would have fallen behind and mental health would have suffered. Thanks for making the classes fun and engaging. From enhancing their dancing to scavenger hunts and tiktok/make-up workshops. You’ve both been amazing

We can’t thank her enough for the extra mile she goes to settle our little girl back into the learning environment after lockdown and lots of changes at home.
Marianne Staves
- This lady won’t get any more votes other than mine as she’s looked after and taught my child on a one to one basis for 5 years as a learning support assistant so no one else has benefited from her support other than us so I can’t see my vote counting but I still could not vote for anyone else. This lady is the reason my child has progressed so well during her infant years (my child had a stroke at birth therefore numerous learning and physical difficulties). Not only has she taught my child and taught her well, she’s taken the time to get to know her inside out, as much as I do, she’s looked into her condition and studied it over and over in her own time, I know this from the many things she would say when I dropped my daughter off or picked her up that it was obvious she was doing her homework so to speak, she really cared and I dread to think where my daughter would be now if it wasn’t for her believing in her.

With her help, he has been referred for a GDA assessment. She is an absolute credit to Edenthorpe Hall Academy and I will never be able to thank her for everything she has given my family. She has changed our lives and supported us no end. Even during the COVID-19 outbreak she has been in contact numerous times a week to ensure we had a person fighting our corner. And she even arranged a whole school Teacher dancing videos to keep our spirits up. I’m so lucky my daughter had her for the last year to nurture her, and encourage her learning with which she has now developed, and she has so much more confidence. Even luckier to know this will go on for the next year also. Throughout all of this she has been my unsung hero!

Scott has had his fair share of ups and downs throughout the past year or so but has come shining through and never lets anything get in the way of being the best football coach to the team as he always put their needs first. He works full time and coaches this grassroots under 8’s team in his spare time. Throughout the whole of lockdown Scott has provided the team with online virtual training sessions including yoga fitness and skills training to each and every one of the team on a 3 x a weekly basis to enable the team to keep their spirits up and keeping them fit and in touch with everyone in their team.
