Design a Den Challenge

Calling all young budding designers, architects and builders across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire!

SAS (Senior Architectural Systems) in Denaby are on a mission to find the best imaginary hideaway in their ‘Design a Den’ competition. They’re looking for children between the age of 4 and 11 to take on the challenge!

The challenge 

Ask your child to imagine a space that’s just for them, where they have total control over how it looks and no grown-ups are allowed! What would their den be made of? What would it look like? What activities might they want to do in their den?

SAS are looking for really inspirational ideas and especially ones that consider the environment, so have a think about what materials can be reused or recycled. The more unusual, the better!

Once your child has imagined what their own space could look life, bring it to life in any of these ways:

• Build – maybe build the dream den in the garden?
• Model Making – what about making a model of their den? Use whatever you have available such as card, paper or foil and don’t forget to check the recycling box!
• Drawing/Painting/Collages – children can get creative on paper, using paints, pens, pencils to get their ideas across.
• Design – create the den by using a drawing program or software on your computer or tablet.

When your child’s creation is complete, simply take a photograph and email it in PDF or JPEG format to SAS ([email protected])

Name, age, address must be included.

There are several prizes for the winner and runners up in the following categories too!

• 4 – 6 year olds
• 7-9 year olds
• 10-11 year olds

The Prizes

Designs will be judged on creativity, how it has been made eco-friendsly and also any ideas that you have had for using recycled materials and objects.

One winner from each age category will receive a brand new iPad!! There will also be a runner up in each cagetory and they will receive an art and crafts set.

• There is an amazing programme called The Dengineers on CBBC
• Choose a theme – a happy place, somewhere you have visited, something to do with sports or activity your child enjoys
• Help your child search online if they’re younger to see what other dens are out there!
